Born and bred in Perth, Gavin completed a Bachelor of Vision Science at UWA before relocating to Melbourne to complete his Bachelor of Optometry Degree. Following this he completed Postgraduate qualifications in Advanced Clinical Optometry and Ocular Therapeutics allowing him to treat various eye conditions with topical medicines. He has developed an aptitude in complex contact lens fitting for various corneal conditions including keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post-corneal graft and other irregular corneas. He is also highly experienced in Orthokeratology (orthok) and Myopia Control, and is currently the only West Australian to hold a Fellowship with the International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control.

Gavin is a lecturer and part of the academic team at the University of Western Australia delivering the Doctor of Optometry program. He is also currently completing his PhD, where he is exploring the impacts of higher-order aberrations in corneal diseases like keratoconus.

Gavin loves solving people's vision related problems and making a difference in their lives. Gavin Consults between our Floreat and Fremantle practices.

Jenny has over 25 years’ experience as a clinical optometrist. Her career began at the Australian College of Optometry in Melbourne, where her work included clinical teaching, providing care to those from diverse cultural backgrounds and working in multidisciplinary care settings. She completed the post graduate certificate in Ocular Therapeutics in 2001.

Since moving to Perth in 2010, Jenny has enjoyed working with the team at Abernethy Owens. She provides thorough consultations with a focus on listening to and caring for each patient as an individual. Jenny strives for excellent solutions for her patients while helping them to understand their vision and eye health.

Jenny is also a part of the Doctor of Optometry academic team at the University of Western Australia. Jenny consults at our Floreat practice.

B. Optom; Ophthalmic Medicines Prescriber

Alvin was born and raised in Perth. He later moved to Melbourne to complete his Bachelor of Optometry, with placements in Melbourne, regional Victoria and Waterloo, Canada. Upon returning to Perth, he commenced his career with Abernethy Owens Optometrists in 2011. He enjoys providing comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages, including children. He has experience in many types of contact lens fitting including orthokeratology. As a therapeutically endorsed Optometrist, Alvin is able to prescribe medicated eye drops to treat certain eye conditions.

Outside Optometry, Alvin is a keen musician, playing piano and arranging music in his spare time. Alvin consults from our Rockingham and Floreat practices.

For Rebecca, the best thing about being an optometrist is the ability to meet new people each and every day and to make tangible differences in those people's lives. Rebecca loves that optometry allows her to combine her love of science, problem solving and helping people into a 9-5.

Rebecca grew up in Brisbane and studied at Queensland University of Technology. After graduating as a therapeutically endorsed optometrist, Rebecca soon began her career in Perth. Rebecca enjoys all aspects of optometry and always ensures her genuine interest in her patients' lives allows her to cater to their specific visual needs and wants. Rebecca has a keen interest in the diagnosis and management of many eye conditions and provides comprehensive care to patients of all ages. Rebecca enjoys taking the time to break down some of the optometry jargon so that her patients have a much greater understanding of their own eye health.

When Rebecca isn't practicing optometry, you'll find her spending time at the beach with a good book, her husband and their labradoodle - Obi. Rebecca usually consults at our Floreat and Woodvale practices but is currently on maternity leave.

B.Optom (Hons); M.Optom; PGCertOcTher

Richard was born and raised in WA but completed his Optometry studies at the University of New South Wales. He first joined Abernethy Owens back in 1990 but after 18 years as an Optometrist and Partner he returned to Sydney to complete his post-graduate qualifications.

While in Sydney, Richard ran a private practice and also enjoyed a teaching role at UNSW. With 30 years of experience, Richard is comfortable seeing patients of all ages. He particularly enjoys helping his younger patients to manage their short-sightedness using Orthok and other myopia control measures. 

In 2019, Richard returned to Perth and consults at our Woodvale, Floreat and Kardinya practices.

BBiomedSc; OD

Born and raised in Perth, Janette completed her bachelor of Biomedical Science double majoring in Anatomy and Physiology. Following this, she completed her postgraduate degree of Doctor of Optometry from the University of Western Australia, graduating with the first cohort of optometrists in WA.

Janette is passionate in delivering patient-centred care. She strives to meet her patient’s eye health and vision needs to a high standard. Her areas of interest include general optometry, myopia control, paediatrics, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy management.

Outside of work, Janette is spending time with her family and friends. She is a foodie, so you’ll perhaps see her at a café or restaurant. She also loves playing board games and reviewing the latest movies.

Janette is currently practicing in our Woodvale, Floreat and Fremantle practices.
